4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 919 ratings

No food. No shelter. No way out but through.

A calamitous pair of storms.

Two women on the run from their past caught in the whirlwind.

They'll either stand and fight - or be consumed in the aftermath.

Tired of the same old boring story? Welcome to your new, epically long addiction from #1 best-selling post-apocalyptic author Mike Kraus, Stephanie Mylchreest and Misty Zaugg.

***

Twin hurricanes obliterate the eastern coast of the United States, bringing with them a blight that devastates America's breadbasket.

As the nation's food supply withers on the vine, the population turns upon itself and millions die from starvation, infighting and disease within days of the storms' passing.

In the midst of the devastation left by the storms, two women in the Gulf Coast must fight against the dangers from their past to survive the aftermath of the storms and find a new order in a broken nation.

***

Aftermath is an oversized (100k+ words per book) six-book survival/thriller series from Muonic Press, the 3-year #1 indie publisher of post-apoc fiction.

All the other post-apoc books I’ve read are well after the disaster has destroyed the world, and there’s a new, faulty society that the protagonist is dealing with. This is the first time I’ve read a book that occurs during the disaster. It’s very well-written, with a gripping storyline, and believable, real-life characters. It’s a little chilling to see how our society could so quickly be destroyed, and this book makes me much more sympathetic to all those who have lived through natural disasters. The authors do a phenomenal job of showing people from different walks of life, and making their villains believably threatening. I was impressed with how many different personalities the authors were able to write very well. It’s scary to consider how quickly the veneer of civilization can disappear when people lose everything and are struggling for survival - even those that should have been good guys were willing to threaten and steal with the excuse that they had to help their own at the expense of others. This book also totally made me want to expand my own emergency food & medical supplies immediately! And there were plenty of interesting questions brought up - most of us agree that you can kill in self-defense, but what about when you’ve subdued the other person without killing them, but there are no longer police forces and prisons? If you leave them tied up and walk away without killing them, what’s to stop them from getting free and following you to kill you in revenge, or to continue harming anyone else they come across that may not be so lucky protecting themselves? But does it then become murder if you kill them after you’ve been able to subdue them, but they’ve tried to kill you and will do so again? Anyway, this book is definitely thought-provoking, and very well-written, with great insight into different aspects of humanity. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and definitely want to read what comes next!

    Now to the Readers...
This book is a must Read. Action packed. Great characters. Real-life situations and how to deal with them.
It's a preppers go to book. I've read over 100 Post-Apocalyptic books but never read one quite this good. Now I'm only on the first book in the series but if the rest are as good as the first. I'd have to say this is my #1 favorite book of all time.
Side note. I read this on Kindle Unlimited therefore it was free. And I took the time to write a review.

I enjoyed the plot and story but the female characters are portrayed as irrational, overly emotional and borderline unhinged and reckless. There are plenty of male authors doing a lousy job with female characters, it’s infuriating to realize this book is authored by two women.

Sigh...it seems this is all that Gen X can write about these days...all those Zombie Apocalypse tv series for all those years sort of darkened their world I guess, this book sad to say is just another of these series style "books" that don't end until the author notices their audience realizes the same thing and stops being interested. I will finish this series (3 novelettes) hoping it improves, but holding much hope of it based on novelets number one...rather amateur writing, too little character development...

I am a fan hooked on dystopian and post apocalyptic survival novels. So this fits right in to my reading realm. We hear and see videos of the aftermath of hurricanes, but the hurricanes (2 major ones that came together) totally destroyed a huge swath of our country. How the characters handle the death of loved ones and people that are unrelated becomes the focus of this book (and the series). Good people struggle and bad people become “very bad.” The book describes a group of people brought together by the catastrophe all come with emotional baggage that they work to overcome and survive. A good read!

I see others have written better reviews than I could. So will just say, I totally enjoyed this book and it's characters. I like that there are two female leads, that do what many women do...continue on, even though they may be scared and trying to move on from a horrible past. Just dealing with the current events they are facing is bad enough, but soon they will be forced to face the demons of their past. Anxious to read the second book.

Well-written telling about two hard hitting hurricanes devastating to Mississippi then joining & causing unimaginable damage to the east coast. The story goes back & forth between two main groups + other groups with a lot of action. The groups are somewhat similar so at times it's hard to keep what is happening with the multiple characters.

A well written plot with so many twists and turns, each part linked with the otbers that at first seem like the stories of unconnected survivors. Strong female characters, action packed but without forgetting to make sure you get to know and connect with each the players. I'd like to think I'd have the strength to carry on in the face of disaster and see hope like these women do! A post-apocoyptic novel that focuses on the human aspect, both good and bad in the face of seemingly impossible odds. Some great survival tips and poiniant imagery - an absolute must read, looking forward to the next book!

In the aftermath of hurricanes Alpha and Beta, April and Rita battle to survive for what the most important things in their lives. Finding new friends they don't realise that their worst fears have not only survived but are on the lookout for them. A desperate story of survival, loss and fear bringing out the best in some and the worst in others.
